Just My Size & I Love It

One thing that I have notice becoming more of a problem amongst out children is the emphasis on size. Media, magazine and other avenues of social media have made the world seem that they only way you can be considered close to beautiful is if you are a size 0. What we need to realize that we are all different sizes. A lot of the times our genetics plays a major part in our make-up. With the pressure to be a certain size or the hopes and dreams to look like our idol on TV. Our kids are face with another challenge. Some are beginning to feel that in order to fit in they have to take extreme measures to get and stay a certain weight. Not only do our children feel they need to lose weight. some will over eat in order to gain weight. There is a young lady that I know very pretty young lady, in shape, begun to date a classmate and he told her she needed to gain weight she is to small, and wear bigger clothes. The problem is he wanted her to get down on herself and also not get attention from others. Our children have so many outside influences that can hurt them. The need to be accepted by peers can cause them to go to the extreme to fit in.

Then there is Bullying of all kinds. This is something that grown at alarming rates. With so many ways to bully each other, kids are affected even more. They are picked on and harassed because they look different, so they want to change who they are and how they look to release the pain of what they are going through. Some time this is when you will see changes in normal behavior. This is when it becomes important to pay attention because eating disorders and other habits can arise. Kids are much more critical of each other now and it makes it hard for them not to want to do all they can to fit in with everyone else.

Not only girls go through this. Some boys will to have to face the bullying because of their physical appearance. Not as often as girls, but it does happen. No matter what they too need to know that they are fine the way they are, even though boys are expected to let things roll off their backs, they still need to be reassured that they are ok and embrace who they see everyday in the mirror.

The most important thing we can do is to teach our children that no matter what they are special they are wonderfully made, and that they should love themselves no matter what. when they fall in love with themselves, they will not have to look to others for validation. This is something that I had to teach my step-daughter she was a hermit in her own skin. because of the things she was told. she had to be reprogrammed to know her beauty inside and out. If we teach them now, they will be bold enough to live out loud later and  they will always love the skin their in.

  1. PREACH IT!! Sometimes even skinny people (particularly girls) get made fun of for being "too skinny." Calling someone a boney twig can hurt just as much as calling someone fat, in my opinion. I've never agreed with the "sticks and stones" saying. Sometimes words cut deep. Anyway, great post :)

  2. I agree words do hurt I am a small women always have been, I was called olive oil, I was told I look like a little boy because I am not top heavy, So much more I am 33 with 3 kids still small and I am still talked about by old classmates. so words at any size can affect a child.

  4. You have to teach your children right and I believe that the world has gone downhill and we are not teaching our kids good values anymore. It's a shame that the world has come to this. Great article!

    1. I am on the board of directors for a non-profit for girls ages 5-18 and today they did a video on the things that affect them and sadly when they were ask how they view the world some of the words I heard was terrible, horrible, and more. this is very disturbing that they do not see the world in a positive light

  5. This is such a great post! I spent my freshmen year in college doing some research and giving a few speeches on how the media affects society's definition of beauty and it is so heart breaking to read about CHILDREN with eating disorders because of the lies that they believe. Thank you for voicing your opinion! Hopefully with more posts like this, we can change the definition of beauty!!

  6. I'm glad you wrote this post! This happens to not only girls, but also boys and both need to know that it's ok to be the size they are. Not to let anyone get them down! I'm glad you are shining light on the issue. =)
